Champions Trophy: Strong New Zealand Aims to Break 25-Year Title Drought

Under the leadership of Mitchell Santner, New Zealand is set to kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against the host nation, Pakistan, in Karachi on February 19.
Placed in Group A alongside India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, New Zealand aims to secure their second Champions Trophy title, with their last win dating back to 2000. In recent ICC tournaments, the team has solidified its status as a formidable contender.

As New Zealand seeks their first Champions Trophy victory in 25 years, IANS presents a SWOT analysis of the Kiwi squad to provide insights into their team composition.
—
Strength: New Zealand’s unbeaten streak in the Tri-Nation Series against Pakistan and South Africa gives them a strong foundation heading into the tournament. Their batting depth appears to be a significant strength, with veteran Kane Williamson in excellent form and Will Young and Devon Conway set to provide a solid start in place of the injured Rachin Ravindra, who is recovering from a head injury sustained against Pakistan last week.
The middle order, featuring Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, and Michael Bracewell, offers ample batting depth capable of overpowering any opponent.
Weakness: The absence of pacer Ben Sears due to injury and Lockie Ferguson’s ongoing recovery from a hamstring issue presents challenges. Following the retirements of Trent Boult and Tim Southee last year, the squad lacks experience in its pace bowling department, worsening with further injuries.
Ravindra’s injury is an additional setback for a team already managing multiple injuries. While he is expected to return, his absence will disrupt the team’s balance.
Opportunity: Santner, New Zealand’s most seasoned bowler with 117 ODI wickets, will play a vital role on the slow, spin-friendly pitches of Pakistan and Dubai. The team’s all-round capabilities, with Phillips and Ravindra also able to contribute with ball in hand, are a distinct advantage.
This presents a chance for emerging pace bowlers Jacob Duffy, Will O’Rourke, and Nathan Smith to step up and fill the gaps left by their retired predecessors. Ferguson’s return could greatly enhance the team’s title aspirations.
Threat: One of the key challenges for the Blackcaps will be navigating the middle overs on spin-friendly pitches in the subcontinent. With Williamson at the helm of a dynamic batting lineup, it remains to be seen how the rest of the Kiwi batsmen will manage the challenges of the tricky conditions.
New Zealand’s squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, Kane Williamson, Will Young.

Departing Goodison Park is bittersweet, but Everton is heading towards a brighter future, claims Moyes.

Everton’s head coach, David Moyes, reflected on the significant moment in the club’s history as they prepare to play their final match at Goodison Park this Sunday. The Toffees will face already-relegated Southampton in what is expected to be an emotional farewell for fans, as the Men’s Senior Team gears up to transition to their new world-class waterfront stadium for the 2025/26 season.
Everton’s journey began at Anfield, now home to city rivals Liverpool. A rental dispute led to their move to Goodison Park in 1892, where they have spent the last 133 years.
—
Moyes noted the many legends who have passed through the club, emphasizing that he will be the one to close the door behind him. “There are many individuals with greater knowledge and wisdom about Everton and Goodison Park than I possess. The history, the stories, the great managers, and players—all of that is rich here. I’m simply the one who will close the door as I leave,” he remarked.
—
Moyes expressed the bittersweet nature of the transition: “It will be sad, but we are moving towards a brighter and better future. I believe all Evertonians have eagerly awaited this moment. The new stadium is much anticipated. While it will be an emotional day, I need to keep the players focused on the match,” he stated during the pre-game press conference.
He also confirmed that Seamus Coleman will remain with Everton next season, regardless of the circumstances, and revealed that Jake O’Brien is fit and available for the club’s last Premier League match at Goodison Park. O’Brien is back after missing the recent win against Fulham due to injury, while James Tarkowski (hamstring), Jesper Lindstrom (hernia), and Orel Mangala (knee) will miss the final home game of the season.
Addressing the possibility of Coleman captaining the team for Goodison’s last Premier League match, Moyes commented, “That is something I’m considering. What I can say is that Sunday’s game is a priority for us, and we’ll do our utmost to prepare effectively and perform at our best.”
“Seamus will definitely be with us next season. His presence is vital; his leadership and influence in the dressing room are immensely strong, and it would be wrong to lose him. Seamus will be here, one way or another,” he confirmed.
