Champions Trophy: Smith States Australia Aimed for Top-Two Finish and Semifinal Qualification

As Australia approached the 2025 Champions Trophy, they faced a significant setback with the absence of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. However, they have successfully advanced to the semifinals, securing a top-two finish in Group B. Following a rain-abandoned match against Afghanistan at Gaddafi Stadium, Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, expressed satisfaction with achieving their two main objectives: reaching the semifinals and finishing in the top two.
“Our initial goal was to secure a top-two finish and qualify for the semifinals. The team did well, made effective adjustments, and took crucial wickets in the middle overs. They restricted Afghanistan to 270, which put us in a strong position,” Smith noted.
—
“Matt Short was struggling a bit, and just a few days might not be adequate for recovery. Travis Head batted well, managed to get a bit of luck, and struck the ball cleanly. I hope he continues this form into the semifinals. The guys are doing an excellent job and are excited, so we aim to keep the momentum going in this tournament,” Smith told broadcasters.
—
In terms of bowling, Australia conceded 37 extras but successfully bowled out Afghanistan for 273 runs. “We gave away a few extras today, and Spencer (Johnson) was swinging the ball quite a bit. Josh Inglis was relieved when that spell came to an end. Overall, the bowlers performed well, consistently troubling the batters. It was a strong performance, but it’s unfortunate that the game was washed out,” Smith remarked.
The washout in Lahore left Afghanistan on the verge of elimination, currently at three points. For a chance at the semifinals, they now need England to win by more than 207 runs, lowering South Africa’s net run rate below theirs. “It’s unfortunate that the match ended without a result. We should have aimed for 300+ runs, but their bowling was effective in the middle overs. A total of 270 is decent, but we didn’t start well with our bowling,” said Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.
“We gave them too many scoring opportunities and width. We’ll learn from this. In tournaments, anything can happen, and we’re still hopeful; we’re counting on a significant win from England,” Shahidi added.
Sediqullah Atal bounced back from a challenging start against Johnson and Ben Dwarshuis, scoring 85 runs off 95 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai, awarded ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2024, contributed with 67 runs off 63 deliveries, helping Afghanistan set a competitive total on a used pitch.
“Atal really stepped up today. In our first two games, he didn’t perform as expected, but his comeback was impressive. It was his first ICC event, and he handled the pressure well. Omarzai is exceptional, which is why he was named the ODI Player of the Year. He consistently delivers for us. Today, he showed positive intent under pressure, just like when he took a five-wicket haul against England,” said Shahidi.
Shahidi struggled with his own performance, scoring a modest 20 off 49 balls at a strike rate of 40.81. “Today was not a good day for me as a batsman. I plan to discuss my performance with the coach later to identify where I went wrong. My innings felt slow strike-rate-wise. I will learn from this,” he concluded.

Departing Goodison Park is bittersweet, but Everton is heading towards a brighter future, claims Moyes.

Everton’s head coach, David Moyes, reflected on the significant moment in the club’s history as they prepare to play their final match at Goodison Park this Sunday. The Toffees will face already-relegated Southampton in what is expected to be an emotional farewell for fans, as the Men’s Senior Team gears up to transition to their new world-class waterfront stadium for the 2025/26 season.
Everton’s journey began at Anfield, now home to city rivals Liverpool. A rental dispute led to their move to Goodison Park in 1892, where they have spent the last 133 years.
—
Moyes noted the many legends who have passed through the club, emphasizing that he will be the one to close the door behind him. “There are many individuals with greater knowledge and wisdom about Everton and Goodison Park than I possess. The history, the stories, the great managers, and players—all of that is rich here. I’m simply the one who will close the door as I leave,” he remarked.
—
Moyes expressed the bittersweet nature of the transition: “It will be sad, but we are moving towards a brighter and better future. I believe all Evertonians have eagerly awaited this moment. The new stadium is much anticipated. While it will be an emotional day, I need to keep the players focused on the match,” he stated during the pre-game press conference.
He also confirmed that Seamus Coleman will remain with Everton next season, regardless of the circumstances, and revealed that Jake O’Brien is fit and available for the club’s last Premier League match at Goodison Park. O’Brien is back after missing the recent win against Fulham due to injury, while James Tarkowski (hamstring), Jesper Lindstrom (hernia), and Orel Mangala (knee) will miss the final home game of the season.
Addressing the possibility of Coleman captaining the team for Goodison’s last Premier League match, Moyes commented, “That is something I’m considering. What I can say is that Sunday’s game is a priority for us, and we’ll do our utmost to prepare effectively and perform at our best.”
“Seamus will definitely be with us next season. His presence is vital; his leadership and influence in the dressing room are immensely strong, and it would be wrong to lose him. Seamus will be here, one way or another,” he confirmed.
