Challenges in Block Booking: Chhaava, Game Changer, and Sky Force Under Scrutiny
### Block Booking: The Illusion of Success
Block booking – sometimes referred to as corporate booking – centers around the purchasing of a significant number of tickets to distort public perception and make a film appear more successful than it truly is. This tactic often involves actors leveraging their affiliations with brands, requesting them to buy tickets for their latest projects and distribute them to employees or customers, while simultaneously adjusting their fees to reflect these deals.
The backlash against block booking stems from its deceptive nature, fabricating an optimistic reception of a film that may not be deserved. While it raises concerns about the authenticity of the industry, exhibitors and distributors typically remain silent, as they still see ticket sales occurring.
### Insights from Industry Experts
Trade expert Atul Mohan recently explained the mechanics of this practice. “When an actor endorses multiple brands, they might ask one of them to purchase a significant number of tickets—say, 10,000—for their latest release in exchange for fee concessions or promotional work,” he noted. “As a result, even with empty theaters, those tickets are counted as sold, leading to a misleading perception of busy venues and heightened interest in the film.”
#### ‘Sky Force’ and ‘Game Changer’: Recent Allegations
Both Akshay Kumar’s ‘Sky Force’ and Ram Charan’s ‘Game Changer’ have faced allegations of block booking despite their lackluster reception by audiences and critics. Although ‘Sky Force’ claimed to earn ₹80 crores in its opening week and surpassed ₹100 crores overall, analysts label this as a ‘manufactured success,’ attributing a significant portion of the reported earnings to self-ticket purchases. Trade expert Komal Nahta openly challenged the numbers released by the film’s makers.
Nahta pointed out, “The actual earnings for the first week were around ₹40.50 crores. Though the total shows ₹80 crores, this includes extensive block booking of unsold tickets, leading to the false impression of robust box office performance. It could very well be the largest block booking incident in Bollywood history, with box office sites promoting full venues that were actually near-empty.”
Moreover, Ram Charan’s ‘Game Changer’ also faces similar charges, as claims of a ₹186 crore worldwide earnings on its premiere day were disputed by analysts suggesting the real figure was only ₹80 crores.
#### ‘Chhaava’: The Latest Accusation
Vicky Kaushal’s recent film ‘Chhaava’ has now been implicated in block booking allegations. Following Nahta’s comments on ‘Sky Force,’ he raised similar concerns about ‘Chhaava,’ indicating a troubling trend.
As Nahta tweeted, “Thanks for all the positive feedback on my exposé regarding block booking and its effect on film earnings, but guess what? Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films has ensured I’m not invited to the press show for #Chhaava. A small price to pay…”
### A Distorted Reality and Ego Boost
Filmmaker Kunal Kohli also weighed in on the issue during an appearance on a YouTube show, expressing his frustration with the practice. He criticized the notion of filmmakers buying their own tickets to bolster the illusion of success. Kohli commented, “What is this nonsense? We produce a film, release it, and then purchase tickets ourselves? The media reports on it, but why engage in block booking? It serves only to inflate egos, shielding stars and filmmakers from reality.”
Kohli cautioned, “No one believes those inflated numbers. This misrepresentation harms the industry by deluding actors into a false sense of success. Acknowledge your failures—everyone faces setbacks, regardless of their stature. What truly matters is how one rebounds from those failures.”
