Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar visited Aligarh on Saturday to conduct a review meeting involving four districts. His focus was on voter awareness initiatives, assessing the number of current voters, and ensuring registration for individuals over the age of 18.Just days after taking office as the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar instructed officials to guarantee that every eligible youth is added to the voter list upon turning 18. He emphasized the need for an awareness campaign aimed at registering those who may have been overlooked in the process.

“BLOs should engage with every household to inform voters about the registration process,” he directed. However, when questioned about the effectiveness of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in elections, the new CEC refrained from commenting, stating, “The Election Commission is always supportive of the voters. Programs should be implemented to educate women and boost their voting participation.”

He further stressed the importance of using high-quality CCTV cameras at polling booths for better monitoring of the electoral process. Notably, Kasganj District Magistrate Megha Rupam, present at the meeting, is Gyanesh Kumar’s daughter. She welcomed her father with a bouquet as he arrived for the meeting.

The review meeting lasted approximately two hours, during which CEC Kumar interacted with the District Magistrates of Hathras, Etah, Kasganj, and Aligarh. He inquired about Megha Rupam’s plans for promoting voter awareness and ensuring registration for all new voters. She confidently responded, “We need to implement this campaign on a large scale.”

Following the meeting, the CEC had a private conversation with his daughter before they left together for Soro. In Soro, they visited the Lord Varaha temple. Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988 batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, retired as Union Cooperation Secretary on January 31, 2024, before being appointed as Election Commissioner on March 14, 2024.
