CDS Offers Insights on 6th Generation Aircraft, Disproves Claims of Chinese Dominance

Published

on

General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has shared his perspective on China’s sixth-generation fighter aircraft, suggesting that these capabilities are likely still in the developmental stages. Addressing questions about the advanced fighter jets, Gen Chauhan noted that while many nations are engaged in sixth-generation fighter programs, he believes they are still a considerable way from achieving full operational readiness.

“Assessing these sixth-generation platforms is quite challenging, especially when we only have fleeting external glimpses of the aircraft. Short clips aren’t sufficient to make definitive assessments. It’s crucial to recognize that numerous countries are developing sixth-generation capabilities, but in my view, they are all significantly behind schedule,” he stated during Aero India 2025 in Bengaluru.

Gen Chauhan also mentioned China’s previous claims regarding the WS 10 and WS 15 engines used in their fifth-generation jets, as well as their decision to recruit former pilots from the American and British Air Forces. He remarked that such actions indicate China is still honing both its technology and tactical approaches.

On the topic of sixth-generation aircraft, the CDS pointed out that a standardized definition is yet to be established. Nevertheless, he characterized these next-gen aircraft as capable of both manned and unmanned operations, possibly functioning as aerial command centers that manage various unmanned systems like drones, thereby revolutionizing combat strategies.

“Sixth-generation aircraft would incorporate advanced technologies, including sophisticated networks, data analytics, and artificial intelligence, empowering pilots with enhanced decision-making abilities during combat,” Gen Chauhan elaborated. He emphasized that these aircraft would also feature long-range smart weapons, improved stealth capabilities, and self-healing technologies, representing a significant advancement in aerial warfare.

While India is advancing its own fifth-generation fighter program, the AMCA, Gen Chauhan expressed confidence that the country’s defense innovations will continue to progress in the near future, even as other nations explore the evolving notion of sixth-generation aircraft.
