Cate Blanchett Pushes for a Return to Non-Televised Award Shows

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett expresses a desire to rewind and halt the broadcast of glamorous award shows. During a recent appearance on the “Las Culturistas” podcast with hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the ‘Carol’ star reminisced about a time when privacy was woven into the fabric of entertainment discussions. She proposed that the Oscars return to the days when the awards were not televised.

Blanchett’s candid remarks resonated as she highlighted the diminishing opportunities for privacy, stating, “There are so few spaces now where you can truly be private.” This comment reflects the growing trend of capturing celebrities on mobile devices in public settings.

She fondly reflected on the late ’80s: “I loved going to dance parties in Sydney during Mardi Gras. People were just there, fully present and enjoying each other’s company in a non-aggressive environment. No one was recording or monitoring others’ actions.”

Hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang chimed in, noting how the era of TikTok has made privacy even more elusive. They pointed out the viral phenomenon of lip readers deciphering celebrity conversations at awards shows, to which a bewildered Blanchett responded with intrigue.

Blanchett humorously remarked, “I know it’s blasphemous, but I’d love to return to a time when the Oscars weren’t televised. It would be wonderful to have a celebration where people could simply unwind. The industry is at a pivotal point, which could be exciting or deeply unsettling, and we need to come together to rejoice in our craft without the pressure of public scrutiny.”

She added, “Fashion is great and all, but we’ll find out who the winners are eventually. It would be refreshing if those moments were kept behind closed doors. It would completely transform the evening.”

With a distinguished career, Cate Blanchett has made her mark at various award shows, winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for ‘The Aviator’ and Best Lead Actress in 2014 for ‘Blue Jasmine,’ along with six additional nominations.
