Carole D’Andrea, Star of ‘West Side Story’, Dies at 87
D’Andrea’s remarkable journey in entertainment began when she first donned the role of Velma in the original Broadway production of ‘West Side Story’ in 1957. When the musical was adapted into a film in 1961, she reprised her iconic role, solidifying her place in cinematic history.
Her daughters, Andrea Doven, Robin Morse, and Hilary Morse, reflected on their mother’s final moments, expressing how they were honored to be by her side as she made her transition. It was particularly poignant that she passed on the 44th anniversary of her sobriety—a milestone she often credited with transforming her life.

Born on August 28, 1937, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, D’Andrea’s rise to fame was marked by both challenges and determination. After suffering the tragic loss of her parents in a car accident at the age of 16, she declined a scholarship to Penn State University and instead pursued her passion for acting in New York, a choice that set the stage for her illustrious career on both stage and screen.
In addition to ‘West Side Story’, D’Andrea also made her mark on Broadway as Dainty June in ‘Gypsy’ in 1959, further establishing her legacy in the theater. In her personal life, she was married to actor Robert Morse, known for his Broadway contributions and for his role in ‘Mad Men’, from 1961 until their separation in 1981. Together, they raised three daughters.
Carole D’Andrea is survived by her daughters and her grandchildren: Lucia, Francis, Jagger, Marlon, and Lance. Her legacy endures not only through her family but also through the many performers she inspired throughout her extraordinary career.
