Buttler Resigns Following England’s Disappointing Champions Trophy Performance
Jos Buttler, the captain who guided England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, has stepped down from his role following his team’s premature exit from the group stages of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
At a press conference on Friday, he stated, “This is the right decision for me and for the team, and I hope someone can come in and work closely with [Brendon McCullum] to help steer us back to where we belong.”
—
He expressed his feelings about the tournament’s significance to his captaincy: “I’m sad and disappointed, but I believe I’ve reached the end of the road.”
—
Buttler’s side faced defeats in their Group B matches against Australia and Afghanistan.
“With Brendon joining us recently, I was really enthusiastic about working closely with him for a quick turnaround. Unfortunately, it hasn’t played out that way. I feel it’s time for both me and the team to embrace change,” he remarked.
When asked if it felt like a relief to pass on captaincy, Buttler paused, calling it “an immense honour to captain your country.”
His final match as captain was against South Africa on Saturday, wrapping up 96 matches at the helm, including 45 one-day internationals and 51 T20 internationals. He becomes the third person to lead England to victory in an ICC tournament, having won the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
England’s coach, McCullum, expressed his sorrow at Buttler’s resignation, saying, “I feel incredibly sad for Jos. Over the past couple of years, he has poured so much into leading this team and trying to maximize the potential of those around him.”
“Let’s not forget, he won the World Cup just a couple of years ago; that achievement can never be taken away from him. He has performed remarkably well, often without having his top players available, and it shows how selfless he is to step down and allow someone else to take charge,” McCullum added.
“He remains a critical player for us moving forward, and we’ll certainly look for ways to ensure he continues to have a significant impact,” he concluded.
Robert Key, the Managing Director for England Men’s cricket, remarked, “Working with Jos has been a great experience. He faced many challenges, yet never hesitated to push this team towards improvement. Nobody deserved that World Cup win in Australia more than he did. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing him back in action at his best.”
