Buttler Predicts Shubman’s Captaincy Will Blend Kohli and Rohit’s Styles

As India gears up to take on England in a highly anticipated five-Test series starting June 20 in Leeds, all eyes are on Shubman Gill. The young cricketer has stepped into the role of Test captain, a position once held by legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, and carries the immense expectations of fans and teammates alike.

Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball captain and former teammate of Gill during the 2025 IPL season with Gujarat Titans, believes that the 24-year-old is ushering in a new era — blending the attributes of his two esteemed predecessors.

“He’s an extraordinarily talented player and a remarkable young man,” Buttler remarked on his new podcast, *For the Love of Cricket* with Stuart Broad.

“He speaks calmly and thoughtfully, yet on the field, he shows a competitive spirit; there’s a certain intensity and passion in his play. I sense he will embody a mix of both Kohli and Rohit,” Buttler added.

Buttler reflected on the legacies of India’s past captains, stating, “Kohli had that fiery demeanor, transforming the Indian team into a fierce competitor, while Rohit was more laid-back, maintaining a cool composure but still displaying that fighting spirit. From my experiences with Shubman, he strikes a balance between the two. He’s clearly learned from them but will carve his own path.”

Buttler, having spent significant time in India compared to many of his English teammates, understood the monumental role Gill is stepping into, both as a player and a national icon. “It’s challenging to grasp the level of adoration and fame these players experience. Being the Indian Test captain is among the topmost influential positions in the country, right after the Prime Minister,” he noted.

While Gill’s batting skills are well-known, Buttler emphasized a crucial aspect of leadership: balancing captaincy with personal performance. “He’s mentioned the importance of separating his batting from his captaincy; when he’s at the crease, he focuses solely on being a batsman, while his captaincy can take precedence at other times,” he explained.

“Holding the captaincy of the Indian cricket team is no small feat, and Gill will need solid support to navigate this responsibility effectively,” Buttler continued.

In addition to leading the team, Gill will fill the iconic No. 4 batting position, previously occupied by Kohli and Tendulkar — a significant heritage that adds pressure to his new role.

“This is a huge responsibility for him,” Buttler acknowledged, “He’s captained IPL teams, which is another high-pressure environment, and there’s a narrative that likens him to a prince, with Kohli as the king. The transition to No. 4 means stepping into massive shoes, following in the footsteps of both Virat and Sachin, which is colossal.”

With India aiming for its first Test series victory in England since 2007, the upcoming series will kick off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for 2025-27. The stage is set for Shubman to embark on a new journey, embodying the passion of Kohli and the calmness of Rohit as Indian Test cricket enters a fresh chapter.
