Budget Session: Parliamentary Protests Erupt Over Mahakumbh Stampede
During the ongoing Budget Session on Monday, both Houses of Parliament experienced protests as Opposition members strongly criticized the Uttar Pradesh government in response to the tragic Mahakumbh stampede that occurred on January 29.
As the Lok Sabha convened for its first meeting following the President’s address and the presentation of the 2025-26 budget, Congress-led Opposition MPs quickly demanded a debate regarding the recent tragedy at Maha Kumbh.
This prompted Opposition members to rush to the well of the House, resorting to loud protests and chanting slogans.
They also requested a comprehensive list of the victims who lost their lives in the stampede.

In response, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla admonished the Opposition, stating, “You were elected by the people of India not to disrupt proceedings with slogans or by breaking furniture, but to engage in meaningful discussions.”
Similar disruptions unfolded in the Upper House, where Opposition lawmakers shouted slogans and staged a walkout, insisting on a dialogue about the situation.
In the Rajya Sabha, Opposition MPs also chanted slogans and exited the House in protest against the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath regarding the stampede incident.
While official reports indicate that 30 individuals perished and 60 were injured in the stampede, the Opposition contends that the actual death toll is higher, accusing the Yogi Adityanath government of concealing the true figures.
Outside of Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav commented to reporters, “…This incident was a result of administrative mismanagement. Eyewitness accounts suggest that thousands may have perished in the stampede… Families cannot access the bodies of their loved ones, and no officials have been held accountable… We have submitted notices regarding this matter, but they have all been rejected.”
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari shared similar sentiments, stating, “…We temporarily left the House for an hour but plan to return to address this issue. We are receiving desperate calls from families who cannot reunite with their loved ones. We are demanding clarity on why the names of the 30 deceased have not been disclosed… Our notices continue to face rejection without any explanation…”
The Budget session of Parliament started on January 31, with President Droupadi Murmu delivering her inaugural address.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey for 2024-25 on Friday, forecasting a GDP growth rate of 6.4% for FY2025. She outlined substantial reforms and financial schemes during the Union Budget presentation on February 1 for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The first phase of the session is set to conclude on February 13, with the second phase commencing on March 10 and wrapping up on April 4. The legislative agenda for this session includes 16 Bills, among them the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Immigration and Foreigners Bill.
