Budget 2026: Nirmala Sitharaman Announces Seven High-Speed Rail Corridors Including Chennai–Bengaluru
New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the development of seven high-speed rail corridors while presenting the Union Budget 2026–27. The project aims to strengthen connectivity between major cities and promote faster, environmentally sustainable passenger transport.
The proposed corridors include Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri. These routes are expected to connect financial centres, technology hubs, manufacturing regions, and emerging urban areas across the country.
Sitharaman described the corridors as “growth connectors” that will reduce travel time, lower carbon emissions, and support balanced regional development.
The government believes the new rail network will improve inter-city travel and create economic opportunities in the regions along the routes. The initiative is part of a broader infrastructure push focused on rapidly growing cities and long-term economic expansion.
