Sai Paranjpye on Nana Patekar’s Outburst: “You’re Lucky You’re a Woman,” Before Walking Away

Published

on

Renowned filmmaker Sai Paranjpye, celebrated for her sensitive and socially aware storytelling, recently recounted her challenging experience while filming the 1990 movie ‘Disha.’ The film, featuring acclaimed actors Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, and Nana Patekar, was said to have more off-screen drama than on, largely due to Nana’s fiery temperament.

In an honest conversation with Filmfare, Sai described her unpredictable experience directing Nana, having been forewarned about his temperament even before casting him: “Be careful of Nana’s temperament.”

However, believing in his talent, she decided to proceed. “Initially, he was incredibly charming,” she recalled, noting that Nana referred to ‘Disha’ as “his own film.” Despite not being needed on set for the first few days, Nana insisted on being present and observed the unfolding scenes—a gesture Sai appreciated… for a while.

Things soon changed when Nana began feeling sidelined. “For the first three days, I was concentrating on Shabana and Om’s scenes,” she explained. “Since Nana wasn’t involved, he might have felt neglected. Next thing I knew, he was losing it over something minor like his chappals.”

His outburst was dramatic, leaving the crew stunned. “It was a holy tantrum,” Sai remarked.

Despite her daughter’s efforts to pacify him, Nana continued his tirades. One day, he exclaimed, “I’m going. I don’t want to work on this rotten film,” and stormed off the set. The crew managed to coax him back, but the situation escalated during a dubbing session.

“He threw the pages and shouted, ‘I won’t do this!’” Sai remembered. That’s when she, known for her gentle nature, finally reached her limit. “I lost it,” she admitted. “I told him, ‘Either act like a professional or walk out. I’ve had enough of your tantrums!’”

And yet, that was not the end. Nana stormed out again, dramatically declaring, “You’re lucky you’re a woman. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been here.” He exited, slamming the door behind him.

The next morning, however, the tone shifted entirely. Sai answered the phone to find Nana’s calm voice asking, “What time is the shift?”

“He was as good as gold after that,” she chuckled, still bemused by the emotional rollercoaster he had put her through.

Suniel Shetty Remembers Turning Down ‘Border’ Due to JP Dutta’s Reported Temperament

Published

on

Suniel Shetty has a remarkable filmography filled with numerous hits, including the iconic war film “Border,” directed by JP Dutta. This title has become a defining moment in Bollywood’s war genre. Interestingly, Shetty was initially hesitant to join the project, having heard rumors about Dutta’s temper. However, the two later formed a strong friendship.

In an interview with Radio Nasha, Shetty shared the story behind his initial rejection. “I initially declined ‘Border’ due to whispers about JP Dutta being very strict and potentially verbally abusive. I was hot-tempered myself, so when he came to meet me, I told him I would think it over. Yet, I expressed to my secretary that I was likely to refuse the role because if he were to verbally lash out, I might retaliate, which could ruin my relationships in the industry.”

He continued, “JP was determined to cast me as Bhairav Singh. He reached out to Bharat Shah, who knew my mother-in-law. When my mother-in-law sat me down and explained the situation, I decided to accept the role. I made it clear that if he abused me, I would walk away. But from day one, JP and I clicked instantly. He cast me even when I was at a low point in my career, showing that he valued our friendship over any commercial concerns.”

Reflecting on how preconceived notions can affect relationships, Shetty noted, “I’ve probably missed many meaningful connections due to assumptions about people. That experience taught me to evaluate relationships individually and not let external judgments influence my life. Since then, I’ve noticed an incredible positive shift in my life.”

Currently, Suniel Shetty is preparing for the release of “Kesari Veer” and is slated to appear in “Welcome to the Jungle” alongside Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt. He also has “Hera Pheri 3” in the works.
