Boston Celtics, NBA Champions, Prepared for Historic Sale at $6.1 Billion

The Boston Celtics, the current NBA champions, have announced a landmark agreement for a $6.1 billion sale to a consortium led by William Chisholm, co-founder of the private equity firm Symphony Technology Group.

This transaction, pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors, is poised to break records as the highest-priced purchase of a sports team in North America, eclipsing the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.

“Bill is an exceptional person and a passionate Celtics fan, with deep roots in the Boston area. His dedication to the team and the city, along with his strong rapport with the Celtics leadership, make him an ideal candidate for the next Governor and controlling owner,” stated Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck.

Grousbeck will continue as CEO and Governor of the Celtics, managing team operations until the end of the 2027-2028 NBA season.

The new ownership group also features prominent Boston business leaders and philanthropists, including current Celtics owner Rob Hale and Bruce A. Beal Jr., among others.

“Having grown up on the North Shore and attended college in New England, I have always been a devoted Celtics fan. I understand the deep significance of the Celtics to the city of Boston; the team’s role in this community is unparalleled across the nation,” Chisholm expressed.

“I also recognize my responsibility as a leader of this organization to the people of Boston, and I welcome this challenge.”

The Celtics, who secured their 18th NBA championship last year, thereby surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers for the most titles in NBA history, revealed intentions to sell the team last July.

Mumbai: Former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina has opposed the Impact Player rule in the IPL.

Raina said the rule gives batters an extra advantage and puts more pressure on bowlers. He noted that teams are now scoring 200-plus runs more frequently, with some even approaching the 300-run mark.

“Bowlers have nothing left,” Raina said, adding that the rule has made their job much harder.

Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma and several other players have also criticised the rule.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to replace one player during a match with a batter or bowler, depending on the situation. The rule was first tested in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before being introduced in the IPL in 2023.

Sports: Football legend and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39.
