BJP Set to Introduce New Kerala State President on Monday

Published

on

In a move that will clarify ongoing uncertainties, the BJP central leadership is set to announce the new state president for its Kerala unit on Monday, with the process of selecting a successor already underway. As outlined in the party’s election schedule, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, who is overseeing the organizational elections for Kerala, will accept nominations for the position on Sunday.

Sources within the party suggest that the national leadership may choose a fresh face to lead the BJP more assertively in the state, reflecting the sentiments of party workers and supporters.

Former Director General of Police (DGP) Jacob Thomas is emerging as a prominent candidate for the role. A significant number of BJP workers are backing his nomination, believing he would better confront the CPI(M) and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as many feel the current leadership has been too accommodating towards the ruling party.

Jacob Thomas has previously raised alarms regarding Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Kerala House in Delhi on March 12. He drew a connection between this meeting and the ongoing Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) investigation into financial dealings between Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) and Exalogic Solutions—a company run by Vijayan’s daughter, Veena Vijayan. Thomas highlighted the ethical concerns surrounding the Chief Minister’s meeting with the Union Finance Minister, who oversees the Corporate Affairs Ministry while the probe into his daughter’s business is active.

Other candidates in the mix include former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, senior party leader MT Ramesh, and dynamic leader Sobha Surendran.

Following the BJP’s historic achievement in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—where they secured their first-ever parliamentary seat in Kerala with actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi winning from Thrissur—there is speculation about the party’s growing support from the influential Christian community. Some within the BJP believe that if Jacob Thomas is appointed as state president, the party could strengthen its foothold in Christian-majority areas. Should the leadership decide on a new strategy, Jacob Thomas may be the chosen candidate, with many party members supporting the idea of Thomas as state president and Sobha Surendran as working president.
