BJP MP’s Mysterious Post Sparks Speculation About Shashi Tharoor’s Alleged Loyalty Change

Published

on

Speculation regarding veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s growing rapport with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified on Friday, spurred by a cryptic social media post from senior BJP leader and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Jay Panda.

Panda shared a photo of himself with Tharoor aboard a flight to Bhubaneswar, captioning it: “My friend & fellow traveler called me mischievous for saying that we seem to be finally traveling in the same direction.”

In response, the Thiruvananthapuram MP quickly clarified that his trip to Bhubaneswar was for the Kalinga Lit Fest the following day, stating, “Fellow traveler only to Bhubaneswar! I am addressing the Kalinga LitFest tomorrow morning. And coming right back!!”

Nonetheless, Panda’s ambiguous post sparked social media discussions about Tharoor’s shifting political loyalties. Recently, Tharoor’s praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic approach to international issues, along with his critique of the Congress party’s internal conflicts, amplified speculation about his potential alignment with the BJP.

At a recent Raisina Dialogue event, Tharoor acknowledged having misjudged India’s diplomatic position regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, commending Modi’s ability to maintain relationships with both countries. “I am still wiping the egg off my face because I was one of those who criticized India’s position back in February 2022. Three years later, it turns out I was wrong. India now has a Prime Minister who can hug both the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia within two weeks and still be accepted in both places. That means India is in a position to make a difference to lasting peace,” he admitted.

Earlier this year, Tharoor stirred controversy within Congress by describing the outcomes of Modi’s visit to the US as “very good.” His disagreements with the Congress leadership, particularly in Kerala, have further fueled rumors about his potential shift to the BJP.

According to Tharoor’s response to Panda’s post, he was indeed en route to Bhubaneswar for the 11th edition of the Kalinga Literary Festival, which gathered literary figures from across Southeast Asia and beyond, representing about 25 languages in celebration of art, culture, and literature.
