BJP Critiques Karnataka Government’s Proposal to Amend KTPP Act for 4% Quota for Muslim Contractors as ‘Muslim League-Jinnah Mindset’

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government’s recent decision to amend the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, which would allocate 4% reservation for Muslim contractors in tenders. The BJP labeled this move as indicative of the “Muslim League-Jinnah mindset” of the Congress party.

Sources indicate that during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhan Sabha on Friday, the state cabinet approved the amendment to the KTPP Act. The revised legislation is expected to be presented in the state assembly during the ongoing session.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla responded to the decision by asserting, “This reflects Congress’s mentality of prioritizing religion over merit. Are contracts now to be awarded based on religious affiliation? We believe that contracts for infrastructure projects should go to the most qualified contractors. The Congress party seems to have adopted a policy of favoritism towards Muslims, which ultimately disadvantages SCs, STs, and OBCs, as their shares in reservations and contracts are compromised.”

Poonawalla also criticized the recent budget announcements for various schemes aimed at Muslims, contrasting these with Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives that supposedly benefit all communities equally. He remarked, “We witnessed the Congress presenting a budget that primarily benefits one community, offering security training, wedding grants of Rs 50,000, allowances for spiritual leaders, and funding for Waqf and educational scholarships in Muslim areas. In contrast, PM Modi’s programs are inclusive and serve all communities without bias, while the Congress resorts to vote bank politics.”

Karnataka BJP MLA Dr. Bharat Shetty Y also condemned the Siddaramaiah government, labeling the religion-based reservation in government tenders as “illegal” and a prime example of appeasement politics. He stated, “The Karnataka cabinet’s modifications to the KTPP Act to provide a 4% reservation for Muslims in government contracts are a clear manifestation of appeasement. Such religion-based reservations violate the Constitution and could incite further demands for similar provisions from other communities. If the Muslim population is significant, perhaps it is time to reconsider their minority status in the state.”
