BJP Criticizes Mamata for Comments on India’s Economic Status at UK College

On Friday, the BJP criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her comments regarding India’s economic outlook during her visit to the UK, alleging that she damaged the country’s reputation abroad.

While speaking at Kellogg College, part of Oxford University, Banerjee was questioned about India’s prospects of becoming the world’s largest economy by 2060. She dismissed the prediction, which sparked a backlash from the BJP.

The interviewer had remarked, “We in the UK are the sixth largest economy, India is the fifth largest, and soon it will rise to the third largest. I foresee it becoming the first by 2060.” To this, Banerjee replied, “I disagree with that view.”

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia addressed the media at the party headquarters, stating, “Mamata Banerjee is abroad while the world acknowledges India’s growth, yet individuals like her continue to tarnish its image.” He further noted that upon being asked about India’s rapid economic growth and impending status as the third-largest economy, Banerjee expressed her skepticism, saying she doesn’t foresee such progress in the near future.

Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya also criticized Banerjee’s statements, labeling them as disgraceful. He remarked, “Mamata Banerjee seems to have an issue with India’s rise as a global economic leader, which is truly shameful. Her behavior is unbecoming for someone holding a constitutional office, especially on foreign soil.”

Additionally, during her speech at the UK college, Banerjee encountered an unexpected protest from a group of students who interrupted her presentation. They raised issues regarding post-election violence in West Bengal and a recent incident involving rape at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Although the protest momentarily startled the audience, Banerjee maintained her composure and addressed the crowd courteously, responding, “Encourage your party to strengthen its presence in our state so they can contend with us.”
