BJP Continues Fourth Day of Discussions on Next Delhi Chief Minister

Published

on

Following its remarkable victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, the BJP has been engaged in discussions for the past four days to determine the next chief minister. BJP National President JP Nadda is actively conducting critical meetings with the party’s newly elected MLAs.

The BJP achieved a decisive triumph in the assembly elections, which concluded on February 8, securing a two-thirds majority with 48 out of 70 seats. However, the party has yet to reveal its choice for Delhi’s chief minister.

Amid the ongoing speculation about the chief minister’s appointment, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal emphasized on Wednesday that the BJP prioritizes its worker base. He stated that the party’s leadership will choose a committed worker to elevate Delhi to a world-class city. “The BJP is a workers’ party. When such decisions arise, the national leadership decides. For Delhi, the same principle applies. The goal is to upgrade Delhi to world-class status, and a dedicated worker from our party will be appointed as its leader,” Khandelwal informed a news agency.

Reports suggest that a final decision regarding the new chief minister will be made once Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his trip to the United States. The swearing-in ceremony is anticipated to take place after February 13.

On Tuesday, ten newly elected BJP MLAs, including Anil Sharma, Shikha Roy, Satish Upadhyay, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Vijender Gupta, Ajay Mahawar, Rekha Gupta, Kapil Mishra, Kulwant Rana, and Dr. Anil Goyal, visited Nadda as part of a courtesy call in Parliament. The party’s senior leadership has been in regular contact with the victorious candidates since the election.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra indicated that the decision about the next chief minister will come from the BJP’s legislative party and parliamentary board, reiterating that the selected leader will be a party member. “The legislative party and the parliamentary board will decide on Delhi’s chief minister; the leader can be anyone from our ranks,” he stated to a news agency.

Senior BJP figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and state unit president Virendra Sachdeva, have commenced significant meetings to deliberate on the next chief ministerial candidate.

Speculation is growing around Parvesh Verma, renowned for defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi, as a leading candidate for the position. Additionally, there are rumors suggesting that a female MLA may also be considered for the role, with four women in the BJP’s cohort of 48 MLAs: Rekha Gupta, Neelam Pahalwan, Poonam Sharma, and Shikha Roy.

BJP leader Harish Khurana, elected from the Moti Nagar constituency, remarked that the selection of the chief minister lies with the party’s top leadership and PM Modi, noting his focus on addressing constituents’ needs. “The choice of Chief Minister is up to the top leadership and the Prime Minister; it’s best to let them manage it,” he stated.

A vital meeting regarding government formation in Delhi took place on Sunday at the residence of the Union Home Minister, attended by Nadda, the day after the party’s historic win in the assembly elections. This high-level assembly also addressed the chief ministerial selection.

On Saturday, discussing the chief ministerial candidate, BJP leader Parvesh Verma claimed the party’s decision would be universally accepted. “In our party, the legislative party decides the chief minister’s candidate, and the leadership endorses it. So, everyone will accept the party’s decision,” he remarked.
