BJP Claims Congress’s Secret Plan is to Alter the Constitution for Electoral Gains

Published

on

The BJP launched a fierce criticism of the Congress party on Monday in response to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s alleged comments about “changing the Constitution.” The BJP contends that the Congress has a hidden agenda to modify the Constitution for electoral gain.

Shivakumar’s comments have ignited considerable controversy, particularly in light of the Karnataka Cabinet’s approval of an amendment to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, which proposes a four percent reservation in tenders for minority contractors.

During a press conference at the party’s headquarters, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad responded strongly to Shivakumar’s alleged remarks. He stated that the Congress engaged in a deceptive campaign during the last election, claiming that a BJP majority would lead to changes in the Constitution. Prasad raised concerns about the implications of appeasement politics on the country’s future.

He called on Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi to clarify whether the party intends to amend the Constitution to introduce reservations based on religion, following Shivakumar’s statements. “This is just the beginning. It appears that the Congress has an underlying agenda to amend the Constitution to secure votes,” Prasad asserted.

Quoting Shivakumar’s remarks regarding the four percent reservation for minorities, Prasad said, “Shivakumar mentioned, ‘There is a significant debate regarding this issue. Many BJP leaders have stated that Muslims repair bikes, and it is our duty to uplift every community to participate in development. We have initiated this, knowing that many will challenge it in court. Numerous judicial decisions have modified the Constitution over time. Let’s see what the court decides… we will wait and watch. Good days are ahead; significant changes lie in store, including judicial rulings that will also modify the Constitution.’”

Prasad emphasized that under the Indian Constitution, reservations based on religion are not permissible, as they should be based solely on social and economic backwardness. He raised concerns about the ongoing competition in Muslim vote bank politics and its potential consequences.

He also criticized the Congress for remaining silent on the Nagpur violence and noted that the Gandhi family did not participate in the Kumbh. He remarked that while Rahul Gandhi previously visited temples occasionally, he has ceased these visits due to pressure from vote bank politics.
