BFI Criticizes IOA for Establishing Ad-Hoc Panel for Boxing

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has vehemently criticized the establishment of an ad-hoc Committee to oversee its operations, labeling it an unlawful and overt infringement on the autonomy of a National Sports Federation (NSF). This stance has been conveyed in a letter from the BFI President to P.T. Usha, the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
“The IOA did not deem it necessary to consult with BFI officials or its President prior to making such a decision,” the BFI stated in a release issued on Monday.
—
According to Article 21.5 of the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), no matters concerning NSFs can be addressed without prior consultation with the relevant International Federation and the approval of the IOA Executive Committee. Given the autonomous status of the NSF, neither process was followed,” the BFI detailed in its statement.
—
The IOA lacks jurisdiction over the election process for NSFs, yet this decision raises questions about its motives.
It is worth noting that communication regarding the BFI elections had already been initiated with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) on February 2. The IOA’s choice to intervene in this matter is unexpected, according to the BFI.
The BFI has announced plans to file a petition seeking to quash this unlawful order in the Delhi High Court promptly.
“It is also crucial to mention that on the same day, the Hon’ble Delhi High Court nullified the IOA’s decision to establish an ad-hoc committee for the Bihar Olympic Association,” the BFI asserted.
Earlier today, the IOA constituted a five-member ad-hoc Committee, including senior boxer Shiva Thapa, to oversee the organization’s daily activities until all outstanding issues are addressed.
The ad-hoc Committee, besides Thapa, will include administrators Madhukant Pathak, Rajesh Bhandari, Dr. D.P. Bhatt, and Virendra Singh Thakur. Their mandate involves “taking immediate actions to resolve the grievances raised by the boxing community, ensuring athlete participation in forthcoming international events, and facilitating the timely conduct of IBF elections.”

Barcelona Striker Robert Lewandowski Likely Out of Copa del Rey Final

FC Barcelona’s forward Robert Lewandowski has suffered an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh, putting his participation in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 27 (IST) in jeopardy.
While the club hasn’t officially provided a timeline for his recovery, it is anticipated that Lewandowski will be sidelined for two to three weeks, potentially missing the upcoming semifinal against Inter Milan, with the first leg scheduled for May 1 (IST).
—
According to the club’s statement, “Tests conducted on Sunday confirmed that Robert Lewandowski sustained an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh. His return to team training will depend on the recovery process of the injury.”
—
This injury caused the top scorer to miss out on marking his 100th La Liga appearance with a goal, a milestone he achieved in his third season with the club, having played in Barcelona’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Celta Vigo on Saturday.
During his 77 minutes on the field, the Galician side successfully contained the Polish striker. He had an early opportunity with a curling shot that didn’t find the target, which could have marked his 100th goal for FC Barcelona.
Lewandowski is experiencing his most fruitful season in a Barca shirt, scoring 40 goals across 48 appearances in La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup: 25 in La Liga, 11 in the Champions League, 3 in the Copa del Rey, and 1 in the Super Cup.
With 25 league goals, he currently leads the race for the Pichichi trophy, outpacing Kylian Mbappe by three goals, Ante Budimir by nine, and Raphinha and Oihan Sancet by ten. Only time will reveal how much further the FC Barcelona striker, now a La Liga centurion, can enhance his goal tally.
