Bengaluru Special Court Denies Bail Request for Jailed Actress Ranya Rao in Gold Smuggling Case

Published

on

On Friday, the Special Court for Economic Offences in Bengaluru denied the bail petition of actress Ranya Rao, who is currently incarcerated in connection with a gold smuggling investigation that has garnered national attention. Ranya, the stepdaughter of senior IPS officer DGP K. Ramachandra Rao, has become a focal point in this high-profile case.

The ruling was issued by Judge Vishwanath C. Goudar, who took into account arguments presented by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). In a related development, the counsel for the second accused, Tarun Raju, submitted a bail petition to the court, prompting the DRI to voice its objections.

The court’s decision emphasized the severity of the allegations. According to the DRI, the gold smuggling case tied to Ranya Rao has international dimensions and connections to hawala transactions, raising significant national security concerns.

Madhu Rao, a senior counsel for the DRI, argued against the bail petition on Wednesday, highlighting the necessity of investigating potential ties to a smuggling syndicate. He stressed that ongoing inquiries into national security threats and suspicious hawala transactions should not be overlooked.

“Given the criminal context of this case, jail is where she belongs. The fact that the accused is a woman should not influence the court’s decision to grant bail,” Rao asserted. He elaborated that the case features international connections, including alleged smuggling activities facilitated by a protocol police officer.

The DRI’s counsel pointed out that the investigation needs to determine how the funds for purchasing the seized gold were arranged. Furthermore, he noted that Ranya Rao holds an identity card indicating her residence in Dubai, which heightens the risk of her fleeing the country.

“There is no legitimate reason to grant her bail, especially in light of her involvement in smuggling gold valued at Rs 12.56 crore. Additionally, Rs 2.67 crore in cash and Rs 2.06 crore worth of gold have already been confiscated. Her arrest followed an appropriate search of her residence conducted on March 4, adhering to Supreme Court directives,” he argued.

The DRI, along with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), are currently investigating the syndicate’s gold smuggling operations and their international ties. Authorities are also examining potential police misconduct and possible complicity within the customs and Karnataka Police departments.

In response to the case, Tamil Nadu BJP chief and former Karnataka IPS officer K. Annamalai voiced his concerns in Bengaluru, stating, “Let the investigation be completed. The officers have made arrests, and there are allegations involving prominent figures misusing VVIP protocol. I fail to understand why the state government initially ordered a CID inquiry only to retract it later.”
