Bengaluru Open: Vit Kopriva and Tristan Schoolkate Headline Competitive Field

Published

on

The 2025 Bengaluru Open marks a decade since its debut in 2015, establishing itself as India’s premier international tennis tournament. With an enhanced ATP Challenger 125 status, it underscores its significance in both the Indian tennis calendar and the global challenger circuit.

Featuring World No. 128 Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic as the headline player, the event will showcase nine competitors ranked in the top 200, vying for a prize pool of $200,000 and 125 ATP ranking points for the singles champion. This tournament promises exhilarating matches, reinforcing its status as a highlight in the tennis world.

Scheduled to take place at the KSLTA Courts in Cubbon Park from February 24 to March 2, this ninth edition will feature a 32-player singles draw, including 20 direct entries, six qualifiers, two special exemptions, one Next Gen Accelerator, and three wild cards. With a cutoff at World No. 237, spectators can expect a week filled with top-tier tennis.

Kopriva arrives in Bengaluru in great form, having reached the finals at the Bangkok Open earlier in the season. He will be competing alongside World No. 135 Tristan Schoolkate from Australia, Denmark’s Elmer Møller (ranked 152), France’s Ugo Blanchet (159), and Canada’s Alexis Galarneau (177), all eager to make a significant impact in the tournament.

The roster also includes former top-20 player Bernard Tomic, who reached a career-high ranking of 17 in 2016. Fans can look forward to an exciting performance as he aims to extend his notable career.

Tournament director Sunil Yajman expressed his enthusiasm for the high-caliber lineup: “We are thrilled to host such a talented group of players this year. The elevated cutoff ensures that Indian fans will witness quality tennis throughout the week. Our local players have historically benefited from competing in their own country, and we hope they seize this opportunity.”

“This year is particularly special as we celebrate 10 years since the tournament’s inception in 2015. With a stellar player roster, a strong cutoff, and an upgraded ATP Challenger 125 status, everything has aligned this year for a top-tier competition,” he added.

Maheshwar Rao, Secretary of KSLTA and the Organising Secretary for the Bengaluru Open, noted, “The Bengaluru Open has become a premier destination on the ATP Challenger Tour, and reaching this milestone speaks to its success. This tournament continues to bring world-class tennis to India and provides a vital platform for our players to compete at an elite level. We are excited to present another thrilling edition with an upgraded Challenger 125 status and a robust player field that enhances Karnataka’s presence in the global tennis landscape.”

As an ATP Challenger 125 event, the singles champion will earn 125 points, while the runner-up and semi-finalists will receive 64 and 35 points, respectively.

Italy’s Stefano Napolitano claimed the title in 2024 after a hard-fought final against India’s Sumit Nagal. In previous years, the singles event has produced two Indian winners: Nagal (2017) and Prajnesh Gunneswaran (2018). The tournament was not held in 2016, 2019, and 2021.

Departing Goodison Park is bittersweet, but Everton is heading towards a brighter future, claims Moyes.

Everton’s head coach, David Moyes, reflected on the significant moment in the club’s history as they prepare to play their final match at Goodison Park this Sunday. The Toffees will face already-relegated Southampton in what is expected to be an emotional farewell for fans, as the Men’s Senior Team gears up to transition to their new world-class waterfront stadium for the 2025/26 season.

Everton’s journey began at Anfield, now home to city rivals Liverpool. A rental dispute led to their move to Goodison Park in 1892, where they have spent the last 133 years.

Moyes noted the many legends who have passed through the club, emphasizing that he will be the one to close the door behind him. “There are many individuals with greater knowledge and wisdom about Everton and Goodison Park than I possess. The history, the stories, the great managers, and players—all of that is rich here. I’m simply the one who will close the door as I leave,” he remarked.

Moyes expressed the bittersweet nature of the transition: “It will be sad, but we are moving towards a brighter and better future. I believe all Evertonians have eagerly awaited this moment. The new stadium is much anticipated. While it will be an emotional day, I need to keep the players focused on the match,” he stated during the pre-game press conference.

He also confirmed that Seamus Coleman will remain with Everton next season, regardless of the circumstances, and revealed that Jake O’Brien is fit and available for the club’s last Premier League match at Goodison Park. O’Brien is back after missing the recent win against Fulham due to injury, while James Tarkowski (hamstring), Jesper Lindstrom (hernia), and Orel Mangala (knee) will miss the final home game of the season.

Addressing the possibility of Coleman captaining the team for Goodison’s last Premier League match, Moyes commented, “That is something I’m considering. What I can say is that Sunday’s game is a priority for us, and we’ll do our utmost to prepare effectively and perform at our best.”

“Seamus will definitely be with us next season. His presence is vital; his leadership and influence in the dressing room are immensely strong, and it would be wrong to lose him. Seamus will be here, one way or another,” he confirmed.
