Bail Application for Actress Ranya Rao to Be Heard Today in Gold Smuggling Case

The bail application for actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case, is scheduled to be heard on Thursday at the 24th ACMM court in Bengaluru. Ranya, recognized for her performances in Kannada films such as ‘Maanikya’ and ‘Pataki’, was detained earlier this week by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) upon her return from Dubai on March 3, 2025.

Ranya’s arrest was the result of a tip-off regarding her alleged involvement in smuggling gold into India. DRI officials had set up a team at the airport to intercept her upon her arrival, leading to her immediate detention.

Authorities allege that Ranya was carrying 14.8 kilograms of gold, which she intended to smuggle into the country. In response to her arrest, Ranya’s stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, who serves as the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, expressed his shock and distress.

In an interview with ANI, Rao stated, “I was shocked and devastated when I learned about this incident through the media. I had no knowledge of any such activities. Like any father, I was taken aback. She is not living with us; she resides separately with her husband, and there may be underlying family issues.”

He further commented, “The law will take its course. My career remains unblemished.” He reassured the public that he had no prior knowledge of Ranya’s alleged illegal actions.

Ranya’s arrest has sparked considerable public and political discourse. Congress MLA and Legal Advisor to the Karnataka Chief Minister, AS Ponnanna, highlighted that the law would be applied uniformly, irrespective of Ranya’s affiliations.

“She faces allegations of smuggling, and the law will be enforced—whether she is the daughter of the DGP, the Chief Minister, or the Prime Minister. If any official collusion is involved, the investigation will uncover it,” Ponnanna stated to the press.

On March 4, Ranya was presented before a special court for financial offenses and placed in judicial custody until March 18, 2025. Prior to her transfer, she underwent a medical examination at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru. During interrogation, Ranya reportedly asserted that her trip to Dubai was for business purposes, while authorities maintain that it was related to the illegal importation of gold.
