BAFTA 2025: ‘All We Imagine As Light’ Falls Short Against ‘Emilia Perez’

Published

on

The 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), held in 2025, turned out to be yet another disappointing evening for Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia. Her highly praised film ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was unable to clinch the award for Best Film Not in the English Language, which went to the French-Spanish drama ‘Emilia Perez’. This loss marks the third significant international accolade that Kapadia’s film has missed, following its setbacks at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards earlier this year.

Despite this disappointment, the film continues to make a significant impact on global cinema. It made history as the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, showcasing a remarkable milestone in Indian filmmaking.

Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ narrates an intimate and poignant tale of a nurse and her younger roommate as they navigate personal struggles and unexpressed desires during a trip to a coastal town.

As anticipated, ‘Emilia Perez,’ directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, took home the award for Best Non-English Language Film. Not only was the win notable, but Audiard’s acceptance speech also drew significant attention.

Despite the recent controversy surrounding lead actress Karla Sofia Gascón’s resurfaced tweets, Audiard made a point to recognize her contributions to the film. Gascón has stepped back from the awards scene due to backlash over past comments related to race and diversity and was not present at the ceremony.

“I want to thank all the incredible artists who brought this film to life,” Audiard expressed during his speech. “My dear Zoe, my dear Selena, Giorgini, Paul, Juliet, Camille, Clement, Julia, and your team, but also you, my dear Karla Sofia, whom I kiss. I am deeply proud of what we achieved together. Long live ‘Emilia Perez’.”

Although Gascón was absent from the BAFTAs—having also missed the Critics Choice, PGA, and Goya Awards—her co-stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña attended, both nominated for the Best Supporting Actress category. They also participated in presenting awards during the ceremony.

The scrutiny surrounding Gascón originated from older tweets that recently came to light, igniting widespread backlash. Posts from 2020 and 2021 included comments on subjects like diversity at the Oscars, George Floyd, and the Muslim community. One specific tweet criticizing the 2021 Oscars’ diverse representation faced considerable criticism.

In light of the backlash, Gascón offered a public apology through Variety, stating, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone from a marginalized community, I deeply understand this pain and sincerely apologize to those I have offended. I have always fought for a better world and believe that light will always triumph over darkness.”

For viewers in India, the BAFTA ceremony, which included Audiard’s winning moment, was streamed on Lionsgate Play.
