ATP Tour: Bublik Ends Gasquet’s Marseille Career
In a thrilling first-round match at the Marseille Open, Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan showcased his remarkable talents by defeating beloved French player Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon. This match marks a significant moment for Gasquet, who plans to retire from tennis following this year’s French Open. With this win, Bublik celebrated his 100th hard court victory on the ATP tour.
In other Round of 32 matchups, French player Luca Van Assche triumphed over fellow countryman Benjamin Bonzi with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) after a grueling two-hour, 11-minute battle. Meanwhile, Germany’s Daniel Altmaier dispatched Luca Nardi of France 6-2, 6-2 on Court 1.

In the highlight match of the day, Bublik made crucial breaks in the penultimate game of each set and maintained his composure, serving out the following game to love, clinching the match in just 82 minutes.
—
After a shaky start where he fell behind 0-3, Bublik found his rhythm, delivering an aggressive performance with 37 winners, including 13 aces. Ranked No. 48 by the ATP, he converted three of five break points throughout the match, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Gasquet, a former World No. 7, holds the record as the youngest match winner in Marseille history, achieving this feat at just 16 years old in 2003 against Feliciano Lopez. Now at 38, he aimed to make his final appearance at the event memorable by potentially becoming the oldest winner, but Bublik’s focused play hindered that goal.
Reflecting on Gasquet’s remarkable career spanning two decades and 1,012 matches, Bublik said, “I don’t think I would ever reach that point. It must be an incredible feeling to play your last Marseille after so many years. I wish him a wonderful retirement. He’s a legend of French tennis and I wish him all the best.”
Bublik, a four-time ATP Tour champion, will next face another French competitor, second seed and defending champion Ugo Humbert. This matchup marks their second head-to-head encounter, with Humbert having emerged victorious in the 2024 Dubai championship final.
