Assam: CM Sarma Criticizes Congress Over Claims of ‘Appeasement Politics’
The controversy arose when beef was reportedly thrown onto the temple grounds, leading to heightened political and communal tensions within the state.
According to police reports, several individuals associated with the incident have been arrested, all of whom are from the minority community.
On social media, Sarma expressed his disapproval of the Congress’s reactions, describing them as indicative of “cheap thinking” and asserting that the party is unjustly blaming the Hindu community despite clear evidence to the contrary. He stated, “Beef was thrown in the Hanuman temple of Assam. The culprits are from the minority community, yet Congress is targeting Hindus. This is Congress politics.”
Sarma intensified his criticism by accusing the Congress of engaging in appeasement politics that threatens social harmony. He remarked, “Consider how myopic someone must be to assume that a Hindu would desecrate a temple by placing beef there. If such claims arise, we will demand proof.”
He underscored that while the individuals involved in the Dhubri incident have been identified and will face legal repercussions, their actions do not represent the broader sentiments of the minority community. “The vast majority of people from the minority community condemn such acts. These are the deeds of a few miscreants, not a collective mindset,” Sarma stated.
In response, the Congress party has rebutted what it calls a politically motivated narrative, raising concerns about the communal tone of the discussion. Party leaders have questioned the transparency of the investigation and urged the administration to avoid hasty conclusions without thorough due process.
The Congress also emphasized the need to maintain communal harmony in Assam, which features a complex social fabric influenced by diverse religious and ethnic groups. With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, the party has accused the ruling BJP of using religion as a distraction from governance issues.
