Assam CM Describes Indus Water Treaty Suspension as a ‘Major Strike Against Terrorism’

Published

on

India’s recent decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan—a long-standing agreement governing river water distribution since 1960—has received positive feedback from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He described the action as a “calibrated, lawful, and strategic measure.”

Announced on April 23, this decision follows a horrific terror attack in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir, which claim the lives of 26 individuals and left over 20 injured.

In response to the announcement, Chief Minister Sarma praised the move as a significant strike against terrorism, emphasizing the need to hold Pakistan accountable for its ongoing support of cross-border terror. He remarked on social media, “A beginning has been made. Bharat will see this through to its logical end. Pakistan must realize that this is the New India.”

The suspension of the treaty, according to Sarma, marks a “new era of assertive diplomacy” where water security is closely tied to national security. This shift illustrates New Delhi’s growing readiness to reassess long-established agreements if national security is jeopardized.

The brutal attack in Baisaran Valley, a well-known tourist destination in Pahalgam, shocked the nation. Victims included Indian tourists hailing from Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, as well as local residents and foreign nationals from Nepal and the UAE.

Security agencies have indicated that the assault was executed by the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, with operational commands reportedly issued by Saifullah Khalid, the group’s deputy leader, who operates from Pakistani territory.

In light of the attack, high-level security reviews took place in Srinagar and New Delhi. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the National Security Council convened to determine India’s response, now incorporating water diplomacy as a counterterrorism strategy.
