Asian Film Awards: ‘All We Imagine as Light’ Takes Best Picture; ‘Santosh’ Wins Twice
‘All We Imagine as Light’ Takes Best Picture
Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine as Light’ secured the prestigious Best Picture award at the 18th Asian Film Awards. The film faced tough competition from titles including China’s ‘Black Dog,’ South Korea’s ‘Exhuma,’ Japan’s ‘Teki Cometh,’ and Hong Kong’s ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.’
In reflecting on her achievement, Kapadia expressed, “There is incredible talent emerging from Asia, and we are truly proud to be part of that community. It’s especially meaningful to celebrate this achievement together. Being nominated was already an honor, and winning is simply fantastic.”
The film revolves around the lives of two women in Mumbai: Prabha, a nurse grappling with personal struggles, and Anu, her younger roommate seeking a private moment with her boyfriend. Their journey to the beach becomes a path for both to discover their desires. ‘All We Imagine as Light’ stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon, and it is a co-production between France’s Petit Chaos and India’s Chalk and Cheese Films. The film will be distributed in North America by Janus and Sideshow.
‘Santosh’ Achieves Dual Honors
‘Santosh’ claimed two significant awards that evening. Shahana Goswami was honored with Best Actress for her performance in this gripping 2024 crime-thriller, while Sandhya Suri received the Best New Director accolade.
Reflecting on her role, Goswami shared, “The most challenging aspect was believing that I could embody this character. I felt nervous about acting and wanted my performance to feel authentic rather than scripted.”
Goswami went on to say, “Winning this award helps validate my efforts and combats that feeling of impostor syndrome. It gives me more confidence in my abilities as an actress.”
The narrative follows a newly widowed housewife who steps into her late husband’s role as a police constable, becoming embroiled in the investigation of a young girl’s murder. This international co-production includes partners from India, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
