A tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening in Mauganj district, where an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Madhya Pradesh Police was killed and several officers were injured during an attack by tribal members. This confrontation arose when police and district officials responded to reports of a man being abducted and subsequently killed.

In the aftermath of the attack, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav directed MP DGP Kailash Makwana and district minister Lakhan Patel to promptly assess the situation onsite.

In parallel, the Madhya Pradesh Congress party expressed concerns about the deteriorating law and order in the state.

The violence stemmed from allegations against a group of tribals from the Kol community, who were accused of abducting and murdering a man named Sunny Dwivedi. This incident took place in Gadra village under the Shahpur police station jurisdiction. The tribals believed that Dwivedi had intentionally caused the death of one of their own, Ashok Kumar, several months earlier, suggesting his actions were premeditated.

Upon receiving intelligence about the abduction, a police team was dispatched to Gadra village. However, upon arrival, they were ambushed by the Kol tribals, resulting in the fatality of ASI Ramcharan Gautam of the Special Armed Force (SAF). Several others, including Hanumana area Tehsildar Kumare Lal Panka, who suffered fractured limbs, and Shahpur police station SHO Sandeep Bharti, who sustained serious head injuries, were among the eight officers injured in the attack.

Responding to this incident, Chief Minister Dr. Yadav condemned the violence, emphasizing that such acts would not be tolerated. He expressed his condolences regarding the loss of ASI Gautam and the injuries suffered by his colleagues. In a statement on X, he noted that Gautam’s death occurred during a retaliatory response to an unprovoked attack when law enforcement was called to address a dispute in the community.

Following the incident, authorities implemented Section 163 of the BNS in the affected area. Senior police officials, including the DIG for Rewa and the SP for Mauganj, promptly arrived to restore order. Dr. Yadav stated that the situation is now stabilized and expressed optimism for a return to normalcy soon.

In contrast, Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief Jitu Patwari criticized the state’s law and order, claiming that the police had perpetrated atrocities against the tribal community, leading to their violent response. He accused the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home Minister position, of failing to maintain security. Additionally, Patwari suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should recognize the breakdown of law and order in Madhya Pradesh. Following the chaos, Rewa Range DIG Saket Pandey reported the arrest of five individuals connected to the violent incident.
