Given the emotional and personal significance such narratives hold for many viewers, expectations for these cinematic experiences are exceptionally high. Recently, Ashutosh Rana discussed the reasons behind the box office failures of certain grand mythological films, specifically referencing Prabhas and Kriti Sanon’s ‘Adipurush,’ which he believes did not fulfill the essential requirements of the craft.In a conversation with Indian Express, when asked about the shortcomings of large-scale mythological productions like ‘Adipurush,’ Rana emphasized, “When dealing with larger-than-life narratives, it’s vital to adhere to the fundamental aspects of the craft, including dialogues, costumes, and the overall delivery. Neglecting these elements leads to audience dissatisfaction. Whether it’s a film, a play, or a streaming series, authenticity in emotions, language, costumes, and body language is paramount. Audiences are deeply connected to mythological tales and will not tolerate inaccuracies.”

He further pointed out, “The television adaptation of Ramayana received immense appreciation because great attention was paid to the actors’ appearances, the setting, and every detail. Viewers should see Ravana instead of Ashutosh Rana. Many films stumble here; the audience seeks to immerse in the character’s emotions rather than focus on the actor.”

Before its release, the 2023 film ‘Adipurush’ generated substantial excitement with a budget exceeding 500 crores and featured stars like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan. However, it faced backlash for its lackluster visual effects and graphics, along with costumes and dialogues that resonated poorly with audiences. The film ultimately fell short at the box office, grossing only 350-400 crores against its considerable budget.

On a personal note, Rana is currently portraying Raavan in the theatrical production ‘Humare Ram.’
