Ashok Rai Accuses BJP Coastal Legislators of Exploiting Issue for Political Mileage
Bengaluru : A heated exchange took place in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly over the ongoing red stone issue in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, with Puttur MLA Ashok Rai accusing BJP legislators from the coastal region of capitalizing on the matter for political gains.
Rai, who has been actively studying the red stone business issues for the past three months, raised the topic in the Assembly, urging the government to address the concerns. Following his remarks, BJP legislators in the Assembly also commented on the issue, leading to a heated debate. According to Nihal P. Shetty, the spokesperson for the Puttur Block Congress, the BJP lawmakers’ response was “disrespectful and opportunistic,” as they had not addressed the red stone issue during the earlier part of the session.
In a press conference, Shetty expressed his dissatisfaction, pointing out that Ashok Rai was the only legislator who had raised the concern about the red stone business. “Since the session started in the morning, BJP legislators had every opportunity to raise the issue, especially those from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. However, none of them spoke about the red stone issue until Ashok Rai brought it up. Afterward, they used the opportunity to gain political mileage by claiming they had raised the issue,” Shetty alleged.
The issue revolves around disputes concerning the red stone business in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, which has been a source of local concern for several months. Rai had used the late afternoon session to draw the government’s attention to the problem, urging swift intervention.
Shetty further accused the BJP of attempting to hijack the conversation for their own benefit, claiming that the party’s lawmakers merely echoed Rai’s point to project themselves as proactive.
The incident has sparked controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the BJP of failing to address critical local issues in a timely manner, only to seize on them for political posturing.
