Anurag Kashyap Walks Away from Bollywood’s ‘Toxicity’

Published

on

Anurag Kashyap has created several noteworthy films throughout his career in Bollywood, including acclaimed titles like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Dev D.’ Recently, he has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the industry on multiple occasions, criticizing the rising fees for stars, the obsession with box office figures, and a decline in creative expression. After hinting at a desire to leave Mumbai last year, Kashyap has officially made that move. In a recent interview with The Hindu, he confirmed, “I’ve left Mumbai. I want to distance myself from film people. The industry has turned too toxic. Everyone is focused on reaching unrealistic milestones, trying to make the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore blockbuster. The creative spirit has disappeared.” Although he did not reveal his new location, he mentioned last year that he was considering relocating to South India.

Reflecting on his decision to leave Mumbai after so many years, Kashyap stated, “A city is not only about its buildings; it’s also about its people. Here, they tend to bring you down.” He pointed out that he is not alone in his departure; many in the industry are leaving for other locations. “There is a significant exodus to the Middle East, particularly Dubai. Others are relocating to Portugal, London, Germany, and the US. I’m talking about mainstream filmmakers,” he noted. Kashyap added that he feels a sense of relief since moving away, saying, “My stress levels are much lower, and I have quit drinking.”

Last December, Kashyap shared his frustrations with Bollywood in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He remarked, “Now it’s challenging for me to experiment, as it all comes down to costs, causing my producers to focus on profits and margins. From the film’s inception, the emphasis shifts to marketing strategies.” He expressed his desire to leave Mumbai, stating, “I intend to head to the South next year. I want to go where I can find inspiration; otherwise, I fear I’ll end up as an old man filled with disappointment. I am thoroughly disillusioned and frustrated with my own industry and its prevailing mindset.”

On the professional front, Kashyap’s latest directorial work was the film ‘Kennedy.’ He also appeared as an actor in ‘Rifle Club’ alongside rapper Hanumankind. Looking ahead, he is set to star in ‘One 2 One’ and ‘Dacoit: A Love Story.’
