Anurag Kashyap is unreserved when it comes to defending the legacy of **‘Sacred Games,’** India’s pioneering Netflix original that transformed the streaming scene in 2018. Recently, he took aim at Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who remarked that launching the platform’s India journey with **‘Sacred Games’** might not have been the optimal choice.

In a recent podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Sarandos reflected on Netflix’s early strategy in India. He suggested that while **‘Sacred Games’** was critically acclaimed, it wasn’t exactly the “populist” selection the platform needed for wider appeal.

The underlying message? The gritty and nuanced crime drama might not have been mainstream enough to captivate Indian viewers at that time.

Anurag Kashyap, who co-created and directed **‘Sacred Games’** alongside Vikramaditya Motwane, did not take Sarandos’ remarks lightly. In a sharp Instagram post, he labeled the comments “dumb” and ironically proposed that Netflix should have opted for a typical “saas-bahu” serial instead, a notable jab at clichéd Indian television.

“He should have started with ‘Saas Bahu’… he might have succeeded. Which, by the way, he is doing now,” Kashyap quipped. “I always suspected tech people lack storytelling insight, but @tedsarandos is a whole new level of cluelessness. Nice to discover that; it explains a lot.”

**‘Sacred Games’** featured Saif Ali Khan as police officer Sartaj Singh and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as gangster Ganesh Gaitonde, marking a significant moment for Indian OTT content. Adapted from Vikram Chandra’s novel, the series interweaved politics, religion, crime, and mythology—a captivating blend that resonated with both critics and a global audience.
