Anurag Kashyap Praises ‘Adolescence’ While Criticizing Netflix India as ‘Dishonest and Corrupt’
Initially, Kashyap praised ‘Adolescence’ as “better than any film or anything I’ve seen,” highlighting the remarkable performances by Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham, who also co-created the series with Jack Thorne. He was particularly impressed by the technical execution, noting that each episode was filmed in a single take. “The sheer amount of effort involved… I can only imagine the extensive rehearsals and preparations they undertook,” he remarked, giving special credit to cinematographer Matthew Lewis and director Philip Barantini, referring to them as “geniuses.”
However, Kashyap didn’t hesitate to critique Netflix India, lamenting the disconnect between the platform’s global aspirations and its support for Indian content. He referenced comments from Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who lauded ‘Adolescence’ for “pushing into brand new territories” and “defying limits of creativity.” Despite this praise, Kashyap remained unconvinced. “If this had been pitched to them, they likely would have rejected it or condensed it into a 90-minute film,” he argued, expressing disappointment over Netflix India’s reluctance to take creative risks.
Kashyap’s turbulent relationship with Netflix India is not a newfound issue. While ‘Sacred Games’ stands out as one of their major successes, he revealed that his experiences with the platform afterward have been underwhelming. He cited a “lack of empathy, courage, and a mix of ignorance with significant insecurity” as sources of frustration, criticizing the platform for prioritizing subscription growth over substantive storytelling.
Remarkably, Kashyap pointed out that some of the finest Indian content on Netflix wasn’t even developed by them. He mentioned ‘Delhi Crime’ and ‘Black Warrant’ as acquisitions rather than original projects, while noting that shows like ‘Kohrra’ and ‘Trial by Fire’ were initially met with skepticism from the platform.
