Anti-Suicide Device Installed in Hostel Ceiling Fans to Prevent Student Suicides

Bengaluru: In a significant move to curb the rising number of student suicides, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has initiated the installation of anti-suicide devices on ceiling fans in college hostels.

The device, fitted to ceiling fans, is designed to detect any load exceeding a preset limit. When such weight is applied, the system automatically triggers an alert, detaching the fan from its hook and rendering it non-functional for hanging. In addition to this fail-safe mechanism, the device is equipped with a siren that immediately alerts hostel authorities, allowing for quick intervention and support.

According to university officials, this initiative not only aims to physically prevent suicide attempts but also enables timely identification of students in distress. Authorities hope this will help provide them with necessary psychological support and counselling.

A pilot test of the device has already been conducted at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MIMS), where its functionality and reliability were successfully demonstrated.

This “master plan” by RGUHS is being lauded as a vital step toward ensuring student safety and mental well-being in educational institutions across the state.

Bommai Declines Honorary Doctorate, Urges Recognition for Real Achievers

Bengaluru: Basavaraj Bommai has declined the Honorary Doctorate offered by Haveri University.

In a social media post, he said he had already informed the Vice-Chancellor about his decision. He thanked the university for the honour.

Bommai said he does not seek awards as he is in public service. He added that people’s love and trust are the greatest recognition for him.

He said Honorary Doctorates should be given to people who have made significant contributions in their fields. He also said such honours should not be given to politicians.

He requested the university to reconsider its decision and give the award to deserving achievers.

Beautician’s Husband Attacks Salon Owner Over Job Dispute

Bengaluru: A violent incident took place at a salon in Avalahalli. A salon owner allegedly proposed to a beautician working there. She refused his proposal.

The owner then removed her from the job, as per reports. This angered the woman’s husband. He came to the salon with a group of men.

They attacked the salon owner, Mohan Kumar. His wife Srija was also assaulted when she tried to stop the fight. The attackers hit both of them repeatedly.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras. Mohan Kumar filed a complaint at Avalahalli Police Station.

Police have registered a case and started a search for the accused.

Young Woman’s Reckless Bike Ride without Helmet Goes Viral

Bengaluru: A young woman was seen behaving recklessly on a moving bike in the Banashankari area of Bengaluru. The incident has now gone viral on social media.

According to reports, the woman was riding from Banashankari towards BTM Layout. She was sitting on the back seat of the bike and was seen enjoying the ride in a risky manner.

She was not wearing a helmet. She was also holding a bottle in her hand while moving on the busy road. Her actions appeared careless and dangerous.

The woman reportedly continued this behavior for around four to five kilometres. She was seen swaying and leaning while the bike was in motion, which increased the risk of an accident.

A group of youngsters who were travelling in a car behind her recorded the video. The clip was later shared on social media platforms, where it quickly went viral.

The incident has raised concerns about road safety and responsible behavior. Authorities have not yet confirmed if any action has been taken in the matter.
