Alo: Illuminating the Journey to Literacy – A Transformative Story
Filmed in the remote areas of Bongaon, ‘Alo’ tells the story of a widowed mother who operates a modest tea stall to support her family. Her life centers around her daughter, Pakhi, a bright and inquisitive child passionate about learning. Unfortunately, education is a luxury they cannot afford. Struggling to make ends meet, the mother finds that even basic study becomes a significant challenge for her daughter. Pakhi can only read and write during daylight hours or by the dim light of a lantern at night. Yet, amidst these struggles, a flicker of hope persists, represented by the girl’s relentless passion for education that refuses to be dimmed.

A trio of urban visitors exploring the village encounters the young girl and her mother, witnessing their struggles firsthand. Rather than feeling pity, they are genuinely moved to help. Thanks to their intervention, the girl gains admission to a school, and the once dim shadows of their home are soon bathed in the steady light of a bulb—an ordinary yet profound symbol of transformation. Overjoyed, the mother realizes a future she once deemed impossible is now within reach.
Although the film may not be technically flawless due to its modest production circumstances, as pointed out by presenter Sudeep Ranjan Sarkar, it deserves recognition, not for its technical merit, but for the authenticity of its intentions. The cast and crew aim to convey that those blessed with education have a vital role to play in uplifting society.

“The film portrays the lives of a mother and her daughter, making it easy for audiences to resonate with its message,” noted protagonist Debashree Naru. “There’s often hesitation in society to extend a helping hand to others. We hope this film challenges that mindset and emphasizes that education must not merely be seen as a privilege. Instead, it should be recognized for its potential to empower and uplift those in need,” she added.
“This project was a dream for Dolly Sharma, the mother of the little girl, who also plays the lead role,” shared producer Pranab Kumar Sadhukan. “The filmmaking journey was a mix of challenges and rewards. Achieving someone’s dream often involves overcoming obstacles, and without these experiences, the outcome would lack meaning.”
Ultimately, ‘Alo’ powerfully illustrates the transformative power of literacy and encourages those who have had the privilege of education to contribute positively to society. While it may have some technical shortcomings, its true strength lies in its sincere storytelling and emotional depth, highlighting the importance of social responsibility.
