In a pivotal step toward bolstering mental health support for the nation’s defense personnel, the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaborative research and training. This initiative seeks to enhance mental health care for Armed Forces members and their families.

The MoU was formally signed on Thursday by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services, and Dr. Pratima Murthy, the Director of NIMHANS. The partnership is designed to strengthen mental health services, provide specialized training for medical staff, and create innovative programs addressing the psychological needs of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and their dependents.

The collaboration between AFMS and NIMHANS is built around three primary objectives. Firstly, joint research efforts will focus on examining and addressing the distinct mental health challenges faced by military personnel, including the exploration of stressors and psychological conditions, as well as effective interventions to enhance mental well-being.

Secondly, faculty exchange and training programs will be rolled out to elevate the expertise of AFMS medical professionals in psychiatric care. These specialized initiatives will empower military healthcare providers with advanced skills and knowledge necessary for delivering high-quality mental health services.

Lastly, innovative mental health care programs will be created with an emphasis on conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. These research initiatives aim to develop new treatment strategies and establish better support systems for Armed Forces personnel and their families.
