‘Adolescence’ Co-Creator Stephen Graham Surprised by the Show’s Popularity in India

Published

The British mini-series crime drama, “Adolescence,” is taking the screens by storm. Created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, this Netflix show has crossed national borders to become a global sensation, boasting an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%. The narrative centers around a 13-year-old boy, Jammie Miller, who finds himself embroiled in a murder accusation. In a recent interview, Graham, who plays the boy’s father, expressed his astonishment at the series’ worldwide popularity, particularly its unexpected resonance in India.

Inspired by real-life events, the four-part series explores Jammie’s life as the investigation unfolds, illuminating the chaotic impact on him and his family. “Adolescence” confronts important themes such as juvenile crime, online bullying, and the incel subculture. Although firmly rooted in the UK, the show has resonated globally, addressing issues that many viewers identify with. The unique single-shot filming technique immerses the audience, enhancing the series’ emotional depth.

In his conversation with Rolling Stone, Graham reflected on the show’s unexpected global reach. He initially anticipated it would primarily influence UK audiences, never imagining its crossover appeal to international viewers, especially in India. The overwhelming response from Indian audiences truly surprised him.

“I received a text from a friend informing me about how popular ‘Adolescence’ is in India,” he recalled, astonished. “My immediate reaction was, ‘Wait… did you say India?! Am I hearing you right?’ Apparently, it’s really resonating there.”

Graham elaborated on how the series began with a distinctly British perspective. “It felt very local at first. But then it was as if we cast a stone into a pond, and the ripples it has created are incredible.”

He shared that the idea for the show sparked during a car ride after an awards show. “I swear on my late mother’s life—I had the entire show mapped out in my head, all at once.” The real-life accounts of juvenile crime troubled him and motivated him to bring “Adolescence” to life. He recounted discovering numerous news stories about teenage boys involved in violent acts, prompting him to delve into their psychological and social circumstances. “These aren’t men committing these crimes; they’re boys.”

Graham continued, “I aimed to craft a relevant social drama for today. We’re facing a real crisis with young men, and it’s crucial we start discussing this issue now. It impacts all of us. I wanted to initiate a genuine conversation about it. I wasn’t sure if people were ready for it, but I think they are. Hopefully, this marks the beginning of a larger dialogue.”
