Actions to Address Confusing US Travel Advisory: Ladakh LG

Published

on

In response to the recently issued ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory by the United States, Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), stated on Thursday that appropriate measures would be taken regarding the advisories from both the US and the UK. He expressed concern over the inclusion of Ladakh under the Jammu and Kashmir region, arguing that it causes confusion and anxiety for both domestic and international travelers.

The US embassy in New Delhi released the travel advisory on Wednesday, referencing a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on April 22, 2025, which resulted in multiple casualties. Local media reports indicate that several cities in India remain on high alert following this incident, with potential for further terrorist attacks and civil unrest in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The advisory specifically discourages travel to this state, with the exception of visits to eastern Ladakh and its capital, Leh, noting that sporadic violence is common near the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan.

The US embassy has not yet rescinded the negative travel advisory concerning parts of the Kargil district along the LoC.

Following the tragic attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 innocent lives, the Lieutenant Governor called upon all stakeholders to contribute to a warm welcome for tourists and to implement necessary measures to increase visitor numbers in Ladakh. He highlighted the significance of tourism for Ladakh’s economy, as many locals depend on it for their livelihoods. The LG urged all those involved in tourism to act in a manner that encourages tourist influx rather than engaging in activities that could deter visitors, thereby jeopardizing the livelihoods of Ladakhis. He expressed optimism that tourism in Ladakh will outpace the previous year, with an expected increase in visitors in 2025.

Acknowledging the current challenges faced by the nation, the LG stressed the importance of national security and underscored the desire to prevent any negative impact on the tourism-dependent economy of Kashmir, particularly in areas like Pahalgam. He called for collective goodwill and support, urging everyone to prioritize national interests in order to navigate through these trying times.
