Across 60 Wards 53,384 Stray Dogs Counted in Mangalore City
Mangalore: A comprehensive survey conducted by the Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) has identified a total of 53,384 stray dogs across all 60 wards of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).
The enumeration was carried out jointly by the MCC, WVS, Animal Care Trust, and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. Using a mobile application developed by WVS, the survey was conducted simultaneously across the city. Volunteers, equipped with GPS-enabled devices, travelled through mapped roads and alleys on two-wheelers, recording sightings of stray dogs.
The enumeration took place over five days in each ward, starting from February 10 and continuing until the end of April. Volunteers collected detailed data including the number of dogs in specific areas, the count of sterilized and non-sterilized dogs, and the presence of lactating females and puppies. These locations were revisited the following day to confirm the presence or absence of the previously recorded dogs.
Among the 60 wards, Baikampady (Ward 10) recorded the highest average number of stray dogs, whereas Bajal (Ward 53) reported the lowest.
The survey found that only 46% of the stray dog population within MCC limits had been sterilized. However, several wards including Derebail South (Ward 24), Mannagudda (Ward 28), Kambla (Ward 29), and Cantonment (Ward 46) recorded sterilization rates above 70%.
Conversely, wards such as Kunjathbail (Ward 13), Bajal (Ward 53), Jeppinamogaru (Ward 54), Attavar (Ward 55), and Jeppu (Ward 59) reported sterilization rates below 20%, indicating the need for more focused intervention in these areas
