7 Foods That May Increase the Risk of Food Poisoning During Monsoon

Published

on

Lifestyle: The monsoon season can increase the risk of food poisoning. High humidity and moisture can help harmful bacteria and other microbes grow quickly.

Food can also spoil faster during the rainy season. Nutritionist Rupali Datta said that digestion may become slower during the monsoon.

This can lead to problems such as bloating, gas and indigestion. Some foods need extra care during the rainy season.

Here are seven foods that may carry a higher risk of food poisoning if they are not handled or stored properly.

  1. Raw or Undercooked Meat

Raw or undercooked chicken, turkey and beef may contain harmful bacteria. Salmonella and E. coli are among the bacteria that can cause illness. Meat should always be cooked thoroughly before eating.

  1. Raw or Undercooked Eggs

Raw or undercooked eggs can increase the risk of foodborne infections. Homemade mayonnaise and some desserts may contain uncooked eggs. It is safer to use properly cooked or pasteurised eggs.

  1. Seafood and Shellfish

Raw fish, sushi and shellfish may contain harmful bacteria, viruses or toxins. The risk can be higher when seafood comes from polluted waters. Seafood should be purchased from reliable sources and cooked properly.

  1. Unpasteurised Milk and Cheese

Raw milk and soft cheese made from unpasteurised milk can contain harmful bacteria. Listeria is one of the bacteria that can cause serious foodborne illness. Pasteurised milk and dairy products are generally a safer choice.

  1. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Unwashed fruits and vegetables may carry germs, bacteria and soil contaminants. Leafy vegetables may also become contaminated through water or handling. Fruits and vegetables should be washed well under running water before eating or cooking.

  1. Cooked Rice and Pasta

Cooked rice, noodles and pasta can become unsafe if they are left at room temperature for a long time. Bacteria can multiply quickly in such conditions. Cooked food should be refrigerated within two hours.

  1. Deli Meat and Ready-to-Eat Salads

Pre-packed salads, coleslaw and potato salad can spoil if they are not stored properly. Sliced deli meats can also become contaminated during handling. These foods should be kept refrigerated and consumed before they spoil.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Child’s Tiffin Box Clean

Published

on

Lifestyle:  Keeping a child’s tiffin box clean is important for maintaining good hygiene and preventing the growth of germs. The box should be cleaned every day after use.

Parents should first remove leftover food and wrappers as soon as the child returns home. The tiffin box can then be washed with warm water and mild dishwashing liquid. A soft sponge is best for cleaning the main parts of the box.

Special attention should be given to corners, grooves and other small areas where food particles may remain. A small cleaning brush or an old toothbrush can help reach these difficult spots.

The rubber gasket in the lid should also be removed and washed regularly. Moisture trapped under the seal can lead to mould and unpleasant smells.

After washing, the box should be left open and turned upside down to dry completely. It is better to make sure there is no moisture left before closing and storing it.

For stubborn stains, parents can use a paste made from baking soda and warm water. Baking soda can also help reduce unpleasant odours when left inside a dry tiffin box overnight.

Another option is to soak the box in a diluted vinegar solution to tackle lingering smells. Keeping the clean, open box in direct sunlight for a few hours can also help remove odours naturally.

Regular cleaning and proper drying can help keep a child’s tiffin box fresh, hygienic and ready for daily use.
