24 Maoists Neutralized in Chhattisgarh Encounter; One Soldier Sacrifices Life

Published

on

Security forces in Chhattisgarh dealt a significant blow to left-wing extremism by killing 24 Maoists in a fierce encounter at the border of Dantewada and Bijapur on Thursday. This operation was initiated based on intelligence reports indicating a substantial Maoist presence in the Gangaloor area, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. While all the deceased Maoists were recovered, one District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan, Raju Oyami, tragically lost his life.

The encounter continues, with intermittent gunfire reported from both sides. Bastar Inspector General Sundarraj P confirmed that security forces have pushed deep into Maoist territory, and Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav affirmed that the operation is proceeding as intended. Dantewada SP Gaurav Rai noted that security personnel from Hiroli have strategically advanced to bolster the siege.

In a related operation along the Kanker-Narayanpur border in southern Chhattisgarh, security forces have killed four Maoist insurgents amidst a fierce exchange of fire, sparked by intelligence about a significant Maoist gathering. The troops have surrounded a large group of insurgents, seizing four weapons, including an automatic SLR, from the encounter site, highlighting the clash’s seriousness.

As security forces tighten their grip, authorities anticipate an increase in the Maoist death toll, with heavy exchanges of gunfire still ongoing. These operations are part of a sustained effort to combat Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh. Since the beginning of 2025, security forces have neutralized 73 Maoists, while approximately 300 were killed in various encounters throughout 2024. Both central and state governments have intensified actions to dismantle Maoist networks, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah aiming to render India free of Maoism by March 31, 2026.

Meanwhile, in the Thulthuli region along the Narayanpur-Dantewada border, an IED explosion injured two jawans, who are now reported to be in stable condition as security forces continue search operations in the vicinity. The ongoing threat of IEDs presents significant challenges for security personnel engaged in counterinsurgency efforts.

The Chhattisgarh police, alongside DRG and Specialty Task Force (STF) units, have launched persistent operations to dismantle Maoist strongholds. Among the year’s most notable encounters was the killing of 31 Maoists in Bijapur National Park on February 9. On January 16, security forces eliminated 18 Maoists at the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. Earlier, on January 12, five Maoists, including two women, were killed in the Madded region of Bijapur. The most devastating attack occurred on January 6, when an IED blast in Bijapur claimed the lives of eight personnel and a driver.

Additionally, a large-scale operation in February along the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border, involving over 1,000 security personnel, resulted in the deaths of 31 Maoists in the Indravati National Park area of Bijapur. In that encounter, one DRG and one STF jawan were martyred, while two others sustained injuries and were airlifted to Raipur for medical care.

The Maoist insurgency poses a persistent challenge in Chhattisgarh, particularly in the Bastar region, where dense forests and challenging terrain provide cover for guerrilla warfare. In response, the government has implemented a dual strategy that combines aggressive military action with developmental initiatives aimed at undermining Maoist influence.

Security forces are establishing forward operating bases, enhancing road and telecommunications infrastructure, and promoting welfare programs such as Public Distribution System (PDS) shops, anganwadis, and electrification projects to build trust within tribal communities. Bastar IG Sundarraj P emphasized that the targeting of high-ranking Maoist leaders has significantly weakened their operational effectiveness, with improved intelligence playing a critical role in recent successes.

The government is also encouraging Maoist surrenders as part of a broader approach to restore peace in the region. The March 20, 2025, encounter represents another significant step in the ongoing struggle against left-wing extremism. While security forces have achieved considerable victories, the loss of personnel and the ongoing threat from IEDs remind us of the perilous conditions faced by those on the front lines.

With the government aiming for a 2026 deadline to eradicate the Maoist insurgency, the coming months will be pivotal in determining whether Chhattisgarh can dismantle Maoist networks and pave the way for lasting stability and development.
