1st ODI: Shreyas Iyer Unveils Unexpected Selection Following Late-Night Call from Rohit Sharma
Shreyas Iyer was crucial to India’s triumph over England in the first ODI held in Nagpur, where he scored a remarkable 59 runs off just 36 balls. In an unexpected twist during the post-match interview, Iyer revealed that he was not initially part of India’s playing XI for the match.
With star player Virat Kohli sidelined due to a swollen right knee, India was already dealing with a forced lineup change. Yashasvi Jaiswal, making his ODI debut, stepped into the team. While many believed Jaiswal was brought in as a direct replacement for Kohli, Iyer’s comments indicate that Jaiswal was actually part of the initial plans, leaving Iyer destined to start the series as a reserve.
—
“I have a funny story,” Iyer shared. “I was watching a movie last night, thinking I could stretch my evening a bit longer, but then I received a call from the captain informing me that I might play because of Virat’s injury. I rushed back to my room and went to sleep immediately.”
—
When questioned about Jaiswal’s selection over him in the initial XI, Iyer tactfully sidestepped any controversy. “I know what you want me to say, but I’ll keep it low-key and just enjoy this victory,” he replied.
Jaiswal’s inclusion prompted a shift in India’s batting order, separating regular openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, with Gill sliding down to No. 3. If Kohli had been available, the specific arrangement for the No. 3 position would have been uncertain.
Iyer has recently been India’s go-to No. 4 batsman in ODIs, playing a vital role in their journey to the 2023 World Cup final, where he accumulated 468 runs at an impressive average of 66.25, featuring two centuries, one being a commanding 105 off 70 balls in the semi-final against New Zealand. His strike rate of 113.24 was the highest among India’s middle-order batsmen.
With the Champions Trophy set to kick off on February 19, this ODI series against England serves as India’s last opportunity to refine their lineup. Jaiswal’s inclusion may suggest that India is preparing him as a backup opener in case of injuries, while Gill’s adjustment to the middle order might indicate a possible strategic shift.
