The ongoing Karnataka gold smuggling case involving popular actress Ranya Rao has ignited a fierce political battle between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP. The case, which involves the stepdaughter of a senior IPS officer, has already created significant political turmoil in the southern state.

Kannada actress Ranya Rao and her business partner Tarun Raju were taken into custody by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for 15 and 5 days, respectively, following their arrests on Monday. The DRI has alleged that Ranya Rao is not cooperating with the investigation, necessitating further interrogation to uncover the extent of involvement from others, including potential politicians and officials from various sectors in this gold smuggling operation.

Tarun Raju, the second individual arrested in this case, is the son of a businessman and is believed to have facilitated gold procurement for the actress during her frequent trips to the Gulf. Central investigative agencies such as the CBI are also exploring the possibility of involvement from various officials and security personnel in this smuggling network.

During her court appearance on Monday, Ranya Rao claimed she was being harassed and mistreated by investigators, a statement that officials denied, asserting that all interrogations are conducted under CCTV surveillance, which can be verified if necessary.

As investigators gain custody of the two suspects, revelations from the case have heated the political climate, with BJP asserting that a high-ranking Congress leader may be implicated in the actress’s activities. Investigators are analyzing the seized electronic devices belonging to Ranya Rao, which reportedly contains information suggesting her connections with politicians across party lines, heightening tensions between the Congress and BJP parties.

Reports indicate that Ranya Rao attempted to contact a minister while in custody at the airport, and with her phone under investigation, the details of her communications are causing concern among several politicians. The Congress party has pointed fingers at the previous administration led by Basavaraj Bommai for allegedly being lenient towards Ranya Rao, particularly in granting a significant tract of land for her factory. Furthermore, he insisted that once the identity of the individual behind Ranya Rao is revealed, it could lead to significant implications for the current government. He also questioned why the senior officer, whose daughter has been implicated in the gold smuggling case, continues to hold their position.

As investigations progress, the BJP is pressing for thorough scrutiny to determine if an international gold smuggling network is at play. Meanwhile, the Congress party has raised concerns about the CBI’s decision to conduct investigations without state government consent, stating that protocol was not followed. However, the Karnataka government has opted to refrain from escalating the issue for now and plans to respond once the CBI files its reports.
