تلنگانہ میں اردو روزنامہ نے اشتہارات میں کٹوتیوں کے بعد خالی ایڈیٹوریل شائع کیا

Munsif Daily, the largest Urdu daily in India based in Hyderabad, made headlines on Thursday by publishing a blank editorial in protest against the Congress government’s actions in Telangana, led by Revanth Reddy. The newspaper accused the government of withdrawing its advertisements as a form of retaliation for reporting the truth.

This act is reminiscent of the press restrictions during the Emergency, which led to some newspapers, like The Statesman, opting to print blank editorials in dissent.

In addition to the blank editorial, Munsif Daily also published a special feature, asserting that it faced punitive measures for its commitment to honesty rather than government propaganda. The publication alleged that the cut in advertisements followed its coverage of multiple communal incidents in Telangana after the new administration took office, including the nighttime demolition of an abandoned mosque in Chilkur, which the government has avoided addressing.

The newspaper also highlighted issues like the controversial change in the school uniform for girls in minority residential schools, which removed the dupatta, and criticized the government for its delays in addressing the salaries of imams and muezzins, alongside the absence of a Muslim minister in the cabinet.

The feature drew parallels to Indira Gandhi’s censorial approach during the Emergency, suggesting that the government aimed to undermine Munsif Daily financially because it could not silence the truth. Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in Washington, DC in December 2023, about press freedom being endangered in India, Munsif Daily pointed out the contradiction of his party’s actions in Telangana, stifling the press instead.

The newspaper noted that while many Urdu publications across the country criticize the Modi government, they have not faced similar withdrawals of central advertisements.

“Perhaps authorities believed they could coerce Munsif into silence by cutting this financial support. However, we neither yield nor compromise our reporting. As a symbol of protest against this unjust treatment, we have intentionally left today’s editorial blank,” declared the publication. This bold move by the prominent Urdu daily has stirred significant attention in the state, especially within minority communities.
